Unlocking the iPhone 2G aka yPhone

by gannzter on Sep.14, 2009, under Tech stuff

So very recently, being the techie between me and my better half, I was given the task of updating her iPhone 2G. There were a couple of reasons why I recommended the update.

ACTIVATE NOW

Firstly, I had been impressed with the iPhone 3G I played with on my last visit to the iStore. The cut and paste feature particularly was real cool. I heard that if the 2G were upgraded, one could get that feature amongst other things. In addition, for some reason, the iPhone 2G did not feature the famous Apple APP Store. Having all of this in mind, I recommended an update.

The iPhone 2G in question was jail broken on purchase though. It is an unlocked version of the iPhone 2G and no one told me that they got brick walled when updated. Anyways, I updated my iTunes to 64bit 8.something version, and proceeded to update the what we have there after called the yPhone. Why did we decide to update again? This is a question I ended up asking myself dozens of times after the update. There is a saying I like, “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”, but NO, we had decided to fix it.

After the phone had been updated, iTunes proceeded to check with the server only to declare that I needed to activate the phone with an appropriate sim card (at & t or O2). I was sweating in cold 2horse power air conditioning, my partner had my work Motorola Q9 for the day while I was to perform the update. Would she return my phone?

I got back home that evening to pick up my at & t go phone sim card and use it to attempt an activation - no  luck. My partner wasn’t broken as I expected, she gladly took my dodgy china Huawei phone as a temporary replacement. The timer was on.

For the next 5 days I was combing through every forum that had the word iPhone Unlock. I learnt new terms like jailbreak, brickwall, quick pwn, pawning .e.t.c.

At the end of it all, I found out about red sn0w (o is zero). Although it gave me some hassle because I was using Vista 64bit (did not work), I eventually got the phone unlocked, activated and jailbroken. Even the  youtube and app store worked. The copy and paste feature also came with the firmware update.

WinPwn 2.5 beta also does the job, updating the firmware to 3.0.  Red Sn0w only manages to update to 2.0.2 there about.

What you need for a decent jail break:

Boot loader 46 and 39

iPhone firmware 2.0.2

red Sn0w

Good luck on your jail break… and if you haven’t already, don’t UP-grade.
