Ripped Jeans

by gannzter on Jun.01, 2007, under Chit chat

Fancy ripped jeansDo you have any jeans that just wore naturally at the knees? Or does everyone have to buy them at the stores worn at the knees. This was the golden thought that struck me a few moments after I decided to write for the denim edition of switched on naija. On the surface it might seem like uncanny banter but after some thought it would appear a serious question or even a series of serious questions.

Does the fashion trend stem from mere “ruggedity” or does it stem from the female idealistic perception of what rugged should be and look like.

My jeans tend to wear at the crotch more often than not? The back pockets get ripped, the part under my heels are in shreds shortly after I’ve bought them. Unlike the incredible hulk my jeans don’t rip neatly at the knees every time I’m mad or overly excited, instead it’s more likely to be the crotch that bursts open to my further annoyance. I’ve never had jeans that wore nicely at the knees.

Maybe it has something to do with where I buy my jeans most of the time. There are three different grades - there are those I buy from the Gaps & Levis or other high street outlets. These ones are in a class of their own but because they cost me so much I tend to wear them for special occasions and they hardly ever get to rip at all before I give them out nice and neat. Then there are the 2nd tier jeans, from the Primarks, Matalans and local wranglers. These ones would shrink and then almost fade to white without ripping oddly. At the bottom of the pile are my good old Aba made, which I tend to wear most of the time and for my general purposes. Ripping at the crotch all too often and fading to hues at the opposite of their spectrum. I even had one that started to rip at the butt, a reality I can hardly forget since “the ripping” chose to occur in public. Personally, I think jeans that rip neatly at the knee patch are quite nice, and make the sort of statement I’d love to make to the world all the time, i.e. “I don’t give a rats ass what you think”. No surprise then that I soon got desperate to own knee ripped jeans. It would make a statement and hopefully air my legs at the same time. I was not going to take the easy route to owning jeans worn at the knees (go to Tej. or Wrangler), instead I put the scissors to one of my favorite pairs of jeans and got it all wrong…

For some reason my scissors worn jeans made me look crazier than everyone else. To begin with, the scissors landed in the wrong part of the jeans and before you could say Robinson Crusoe, I was cutting the jeans from behind the knees. No worries I thought to myself, I’ll just cut left and right leg the same and hopefully start a new fashion trend. By the time the deed was done however, the only people that could follow the new trend were the mellow fellows at the bedlam left of Yaba. The one time I wore my special cut jeans out of my house and down to the clinic the really kind Nurse gave me a lecture on how the sort of insanity I was trying to portray just put my parents in bad light. Before returning home, my confidence and “I don’t give a rats ass” attitude was out the window. It was quite clear that the scissors couldn’t possibly play any good role in giving me the sort of ripped jeans I desired.

I’m still keen on putting on jeans with that ripped knee patch, and I’m still not keen on spending hard earned money to buy that sort of jeans from the stores ready ripped. In fact, I would like to believe that there are some guys and yes a few lasses, who manage to transfer that bit of their personality into the jeans they wear.

Do you have jeans that wore naturally at the knees?

What brand are they?

Where did you buy them?

Did you have to do the Wayne Rooney stunt?

Knees on turf and all…

Maybe I should have done that instead of putting my jeans to the cut.

Many times I tried to figure out, what are people talking about here and what they mean by saying stuff like that. And I realized that they just don’t have a clue about the topic themselves. It’s kinda strange. Anyway I have to say that you mast understand, what’s really doing on to comment things. Otherwise you will look and sound stupid.
